Learning Partnerships' Terrific Tasters

Date: 16 February 2009
Learning Partnerships is a Leeds-based educational charity that works with children, young people and their families.
Learning Partnerships develop and run educational programmes to benefit some of the most deprived communities in Leeds, which are characterised by poor housing, low skills, low educational attainment, high unemployment, single parent families and large ethnic minority populations.

Chi force has taken part in many of the community events that Learning Partnerships has helped co-ordinate. Learning, education, employment, family, safety, money matters and health are the underlying themes. The events provide an opportunity to highlight the services, support and facilities that are available in the local community. Organisations attending these events include local colleges, training and employment agencies, children services, JobCentre plus, Lone Parent Advisors plus a selection of community based services. Organisations also have the opportunity to network with other agencies. As a result of previous events several agencies have gone on to form cross partnership working relationships and sign posting services.

To encourage participation, a number of free incentives are offered, for example free pamper bags for those who complete an evaluation form, free manicures, massage, raffles, free refreshments etc and for the children face painting, clowns, colouring competitions. These incentives increase participation immensely.

Chiforce has enjoyed working with learning partnerships at these events, held in a variety of local Leeds primary and secondary schools, Family Learning Centers and even Leeds outdoor market in Kirkgate.
The free massage sessions are used to draw in the crowds and to hold and keep people entertained whilst other agencies offer information to those attending. People wishing to try the massage sessions are often prepared to wait at the event for an extra half hour. Not only members of the public but their children too are keen to try the therapies and the chance is also taken by any attending exhibitors with a moment to spare.

The response to the free taster sessions is always positive with many people taking up the opportunity to try complementary therapies for the very first time. Enquiries often arise about where and how you can learn to become a therapist as well as questions about the business world of complementary therapies. Chi Force will refer back to exhibiting agencies within the learning market events who can additionally supply answers to these questions for example, Leeds Chamber of Commerce, Joseph Priestley College, and Thomas Danby College who often attend.
